Doughboy Zydeco

It’s January again and The Doughboys are very excited to be playing for the Cajun dance once more this year. 2007 was a busy year for the band, our alter-ego Ock’n’Dough released a new album (Kukulis) and in parallel we’ve been working on a new set of Cajun & Zydeco music with a swamp pop theme which we will be premiering at Straw Bear this year – we hope you like it.

We’ve gone back to using our original name as well and as Doughboy Zydeco this gives us the opportunity to perform as a four piece leaning more towards the urban zydeco of Clifton Chenier. The line up being

Janis Zakis: Accordion, vocals

Jo Porter: Tenor Sax, Clarinet, vocals

Dace Fisher: Rub-board, triangle & drums

Bob Fisher: Guitar, vocals.

Cajun music is the music of the (mainly) white French speaking people from south Louisiana taking influences from European folk tunes, blues and western swing. Zydeco is predominantly played by black musicians such as Clifton Chenier and takes more influence from blues and jazz.

Swamp pop adds a 1960’s flavour to the Cajun, Zydeco and Creole styles of the music and is more accessible.

Don’t worry if you’ve never been to a Cajun dance before as we’ll be providing a workshop of some simple, easy to learn steps to get you going.

Look forward to seeing you there!
